As a TV hostess facing millions of audiences, I used to keep slim and graceful by dieting even though/if it injures fitness. As China plays an increasingly great role in global affairs, an increasing number of international students are changing attitudestowards learning Chinese. For me, majoring in Chinese is a strugglefull of ups and downs. However, the more I learn it, the more regardI have for its writing system.

I’m greatly honored to have the opportunity to stand onto stage and outline my story of how music has had an impact on my previous life.

Two years previously, I developed a disease causing gradual blindness. In getting through treatment, a song relieved my ache. From then on, I fell in love with various music, including rap,hip-hop, techno, rock and roll, classical music and even musical scores in films. Music gave me energy, a sense of satisfaction and a relief and cure for my illness. Moreover, it touched my soul and spoke words of encouragement to the deepest part of my being. Thus I assumed that it was the rock I leant on.

两年之前，我患了一种导致逐渐失明的病。在经受治疗的过程中，一首歌缓解了我的疼痛。从那时起，我爱上了各种各样的音乐，包括说唱，嘻哈，泰克诺，摇滚，古典音乐，甚至电影配乐。音乐给了我能量，满足感，以及对疾病的缓解和治愈。而且，它触动我的灵魂，对内心最深处说出鼓励的话语。因此我认为它是我倚靠的（精神）磐石。

 

In addition to listening, I got absorbed in composing melodies played on pianos, bagpipes and stringed instruments. While composing lyrics, I appliedvarieties of rhetorical devices, such as simile, metaphor,repetition and personification. After I tried out as a performer but failed, I put effort into setting up a virtual choir which enables ordinary individuals with musical talent but without professional equipment and studio to perform alone on video.

Nowadays, moved by my romantic idea, unemployed composers, award-winning conductors and chief singers ofbands are uploading musical performances onto my website, becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Filled with team spirit, we act as a whole, always aiming for glory. Altogether, our choir has issued 10 albums with striking qualities and our original compositions have received positive reaction of the audience.

Festivals, which reflect people’s wishes, beliefs, faiths and spirit of sharing joy, have a wide range of origins, ranging from religions to famous figures. All over the world, after all the crops have been gathered in, grateful people joyfully celebrate harvest festivals. Falling on the 4^th Thursday of November, Thanksgiving Day features a feast composed of pumpkin pie, pudding, mashed potatoes and roast turkey. To show respect and gratitude to God, people decorate church halls with cherry branches and sing carols. To be frank, I once figured they were observing Christmas and even wished others Merry Christmas. Except for this horrible moment, I was pleased to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and fireworks going off throughout the night.感恩节定在十一月的第四个周四，其特色是一场由南瓜派、布丁、捣土豆泥和烤火鸡组成的盛宴。为表示对上帝的尊敬和感恩，人们用樱桃树的枝条装饰教堂并唱颂歌。说实话，我曾以为他们是在庆祝圣诞节，甚至还祝别人圣诞快乐。除了这槽糕的时刻，我很愉快的享受轻松的氛围以及整夜燃放的烟花。

After doing my hair and make-up, I set off for Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to deliver a brief congratulation speech as the best man of a wedding. There I ate hot pot in a Mongolian tent and experienced the Naadam Festival represented by three events: horse racing, wrestling, and archery. I absolutely enjoyed the opening ceremony, where wrestlers with eagle’s strength and grace marched along grassland while the audience dressed in fancy robes clapped.在做了头发化了妆后，我动身前往内蒙古自治区，我要去一场婚礼上以伴郎的身份发表一个简短的祝贺演讲。在那里，我在一顶蒙古帐篷里吃了火锅，还体验了以赛马、摔跤和射箭三个项目为代表的那达慕大会。我非常喜欢大会的开幕式：有着雄鹰般力量和优雅的摔跤手们沿着草地游行，而身着华丽长袍的观众们（为他们）鼓掌。

Nowadays, in spite of playing a significant role in festivals, some typical customs are fading away for commercialization. On the Lunar New Year’s Eve, people prefer getting red envelopes on social media apps to lighting firecrackers to drive away the evil spirits. With businesses taking advantage of celebration occasions to commercialise related items, not only the samba costumes of Rio Carnival but also the riddle lanterns of Chinese Lantern Festival have become commercial.  如今，尽管在节日中扮演重要角色，一些典型习俗正因为商业化而消失。在除夕夜（农历新年前夕），比起燃放鞭炮驱邪，人们更喜欢在社交媒体应用上收红包。随着商家利用节庆场合商业化相关物品，不管是里约狂欢节的桑巴舞戏服还是中国元宵节的灯谜灯笼，都变得商业化了。

If a pregnant waitress in a café chain spilled the milk on you, would you reject the apology of the passive and scared woman? If an energetic student tripped over a pole on the court and fainted, would you replace doctors to give first aid? These moral dilemmas remind me of two doctors like virtue roles in fables and their principles carrying them through the choices in decades of life.

如果在一家连锁咖啡店，一位怀孕的女服务员把牛奶洒在了你身上，你会拒绝这位顺从又害怕的女士的道歉吗？如果在球场上，一位精力充沛的学生被一根柱子绊倒后晕倒了，你会代替医生去给予急救吗？这些道德困境使我回想起两位医生以及他们的道德原则，他们就像寓言故事中的美德人物，他们的准则帮他们渡过几十年人生中的艰难选择。

 

At age 18, after rejection of marriage, Lin Qiaozhi attempted to win scholarships to cover high tuition fees. After graduation from PUMC, though hired as a resident physician and appointed director, she went elsewhere to open a private clinic. In PRC, though elected to NPC, she’s devoted to tending patients, publishing medical research and training new staff. She didn’t retire until death, when she whispered to her colleagues that she would leave all savings to a kindergarten.

Norman Bethune comes from Canada, a country importing energy and exporting maple. In 1938, he disguised himself and arrived faraway China at midnight to assist CPC with a great deal of might. He conducted operations on hundreds of wounded soldiers in despair per day. However, when his lap was injured in a cart accident, he bit her lip and quietly limped away. After his passing away, chairmen Mao wrote in tears an article in memory of him.

They are doctors that patients can entrust with precious life. According to a recent survey responded to by many respondents, the majority of doctors preferred higher incomes and more flexible work hours while patients tended to complain about the sharp increase in the cost of health insurance. Therefore, I think doctors should practice virtues illustrated by the two doctors in response to this tension harming society.

The beauty of the world lies in the diversity. I have to admit that it definitely feels good to explore the downtown of San Francisco and ethnic minority villages of Yunnan. Here’s my travelling journal containing varieties of diagrams and first-hand accounts.

San Francisco claims to be a melting pot that brings about multiculturalism. In the Mission District influenced by graffito and comic art, after enjoying tai chi and jazz performance, I selected a Cantonese bar and ate a series of foods suiting my taste, including fortune cookie, spicy stew and chips covered in cheese. Afterwards, I headed to a museum showcasing historical and financial changes that occurred here. Historically, immigrants went across the Atlantic to settle here, earning a living in railroad construction or wearing jeans and boots to seek their fortune in gold rush.

旧金山号称是一个引发多元文化的大熔炉。在受涂鸦和漫画艺术影响的教会区，欣赏了太极和爵士表演后，我选择了一家广东小吃店，吃了一系列符合我口味的食物，包括幸运曲奇，辣炖汤，以及奶酪薯条。之后，我走去一家博物馆，这里展示着本地发生的历史和金融变迁。历史上，移民们跨越大西洋定居于此，要么在铁路建设中谋生，要么穿上牛仔裤和靴子去淘金热中寻出路。

 

Yunnan province is definitely one of the most diverse provinces that I have ever been to. Apart from being home to many ethnic minority groups, it’s the best district of escaping winter for its mild climate all year round. I was super excited to taste poisonous wild mushrooms, saw instrument mentioned in the oldest collection of Chinese poetry and buy a unique range of items as souvenirs, including traditional Chinese herbal medicine, china plates containing special materials, and hand-made clothing with silver accessories, to name but a few.    

云南省一定是我去过的最多元化的省份之一。除了是很多少数民族的家园，由于全年温和的气候，它还是最好的避寒胜地。我非常兴奋地品尝了有毒的野生蘑菇，看到了在中国最古老诗集中提及的乐器，还买了一系列独特的物品作为纪念品，包括传统中草药，含有特殊材料的瓷盘，带有银饰的纯手工服装，等等。

Following the USSR and NASA, China independently sent astronauts to orbit Earth and complete spacewalk, sent lunar vehicle Jade Rabbit to the moon, and sent capsules to dock with the International Space Station, which signaled a giant leap for humankind. Using current technology, mankind desire to figure out a way to store sufficient food so as to send people beyond the solar system.     

紧随苏联和美国航空航天局之后，中国独立地送宇航员进行地球绕轨飞行并完成太空漫步，送玉兔号月球车去了月球，并送太空舱和国际空间站进行对接，这标志着人类的一次巨大飞跃。运用当前技术，人类渴望找到一种储存充足食物的方式，以把人类送出太阳系。

 

However, there’s an argument about whether to carry on the ongoing space exploration. Some people with a shallow view argue that we should attach more importance to curing fatal diseases and feeding the hunger. Actually, many satellites can record and transmit data on weather patterns for later analysis. Besides, space-based high-end technology is regularly applied to everyday products such as monitors, microwave, GPS, memory foam pillows, and smartphone cameras.  

然而，关于是否继续当前的太空探索却有争论。一些目光短浅的人认为我们应该更加重视治愈致命疾病和养活饥民。事实上，很多卫星可以记录并传输关于天气模式的数据，以供之后的分析。此外，基于太空的高端技术经常被应用在日常产品中，比如检测仪，微波炉，全球定位系统，记忆橡胶枕和智能手机相机。

 

In closing, many intelligent students keen to know astronauts’ life may be disappointed after boarding a spaceship. You should memorize the operation procedure of all facilities supporting daily life. You can only bathe yourself with recyclable tissue instead of water, soap, and towel. You ought to attach yourselves to walls when sleeping, and you’ll float off otherwise. Additionally, the lack of gravity and oxygen can result in the loss of muscles and intelligence, so you must do regular mental and physical training.

 最后，很多急切了解宇航员生活的聪慧学生在登上太空船后或许会感到失望。你要记住所有维系日常生活设施的操作流程。你只能用可回收的纸巾来洗澡而不是水，肥皂和毛巾。睡觉时你要把自己绑在墙上，否则你会飘走。此外，重力和氧气的缺乏会导致肌肉萎缩和智力下降，因此你必须进行定期的思维和身体训练。

 

 

When recommending operas, musicals and films on the basis of novels, this is my first option. Mixing a sequence of elements: narrators' narration, dramatic scenes and logical plot, it indicates people’s plastic judgement hidden beneath behaviors.在推荐基于小说的歌剧，音乐剧和电影时，《百万英镑》是我的首选。

Henry, a clerk of an.American mining company, encountered accidents  while sailing. Spotted by another ship, he reached London by accident. With nowhere to take out a loan or seek help, he was about to lose hope when he met two odd brothers who made a bet by giving hima million-pound bank note and promised him a job in return.

With distinct objective, she analyzed botanical extract from plants and evaluated their medical properties. Having encountered failures, she wouldn’t acknowledge defeat and insisted on testing. Eventually, she inferred that liquid obtained from boiled sweet wormwood had promise and drew correct conclusions after analysis.

After Hitler came to power, all Germany academic institutions and academies gradually closed doors to Jews. As a consequence, he fled to an American institute and died there in 1955, when the whole world mourned this gentle professor with a thick moustache and other peculiarities.

The monitoring system can detect anything abnormal, such as pipe leak, wiring short, catching fire and crimes like theft.

Some even try persuading government to cease using AI robots in that many occupations are being replaced. In this sense, it could even be argued that technological advances are bringing scary prospects for someone.

Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. For one thing, I found my career as a librarian through a social media network. For another, I can write an essay easily by combining relevant signposts, phrases and paragraphs from a search engine. Therefore, I’ll always accept new technology rather than resist it.

With wind buffeting my cloth tent close by the mountain edge, I sneezed as I appreciated the Ergun National park below, whose boundary stretches to the border. When ancient glaciers covering this territory melted, rare bushes became more visible and reindeer always on the move came. Ewenki people built cottages in the valley, living off and accompanying reindeer. I adopted their habit of using wooden teapot before setting out for the next park. Since a ban was put in place, development has been officially prohibited and this prohibition resulted in a visible population increase of species.

It’s truly rare and rewarding experience to enjoy the vastness of nature while shouting at the top of my lungs, or to wander through aquarium’s underwater corridor while eating ice cream labelled “sour berries”. I feel blessed to be alive！

边欣赏自然的辽阔边全力大喊，或者边漫步穿过水族馆的水下走廊边吃标签为“酸莓”的冰激淋，都是十分珍贵有益的经历。我觉得活着是一种赐福！

  In our interactions with other people, we need to make assessments and inferences from nonverbal components, such as gestures, pose, facial expressions and tone of voice. In other words, they’re more reliable guides for assessing and perceiving one’s internal feelings.

在我们与他人的交流中，我们需要从非语言成分做出评估和推断，例如手势，姿态，面部表情和语调。换句话说，对于评估并理解一个人的内心感受来说，它们是更可靠的指标。

 

For one thing, some body language is identical around the world.  People usually straighten up when feeling powerful. By contrast, they have a tendency to bend and slump when feeling powerless. Lowering chins on chests or staring at the ceiling implies students are distracted and the educators need to intervene by inquiring, calling on or adjusting class activities. Children tend to use fake weep to demonstrate anger or anxiety, so parents should infer what makes them tick and tackle deeper issues at work.

一方面，有些肢体语言在全世界都是相同的。感觉强势时，人们通常会挺直身板；相比之下，人们在感觉弱势时倾向于弯腰垂头地走。放低下巴到胸膛处，或凝视天花板，都意味着学生走神了，教师需通过问询，提问或调整课堂活动的方式来干预。孩子们往往会用假哭来表现愤怒或焦虑，所以父母应该推断出孩子们的真实想法，并解决具有影响的深层问题。

 

For another, some body language varies apparently or differs slightly from culture to culture. For example, French witnessing the gesture for “OK” may interpret it as meaning zero. In Northeast China, eye contact is barely approved of because it may cause conflict incidents. In Russia, people greet others by kissing cheeks. By comparison, a slight frown of people elsewhere reveal them to be embarrassed and ashamed because they merely favour shaking hands, or bowing from the waist.

另一方面，有些肢体语言在不同文化中又显著变化，或略微不同。例如，看到“OK”手势的法国人可能会将其理解为“零”。在中国东北，不赞成进行目光接触因为它可能会导致冲突事件。在俄国，人们通过亲吻面颊问候他人。相比之下，别的地方的人们的轻微皱眉表明他们是尴尬和羞愧的，因为他们仅仅喜欢握手或弯腰鞠躬。

 

In conclusion, body language has twin effect on interactions. To break down barriers, you should employ appropriate way to react to strangers’ body language. Besides, read some books clarifying how to distinguish the differences rather than occupy yourself with trial and error. Ultimately, we can get the most out of body language.  

总之，肢体语言对交流有着双重影响。为了打破障碍，你需要采用合适的方式回应陌生人的肢体语言。此外，读一些阐明如何辨别差异的书，而不是让自己忙于尝试和犯错。最终，我们才能充分用好肢体语言。

Nowadays, sufficient and nutritious food is available at the local grocery so there’s a common assumption that it’s produced easily. But I’m convinced that this is far from the case. As a Chinese ancient poem goes, every single grain on your plate is the result of hard work. Indeed, people have overcome enormous technical difficulties to boost yields of crops and improve their characteristic in the aspect of quality.

如今，数量充足营养丰富的食品在当地的杂货店就可买到，因此人们普遍假设其生产非常容易。但我相信情况远非如此。正如一句中国古诗所说，谁知盘中餐，粒粒皆辛苦。事实上，为了增加农作物产量并提高它们在质量方面的特性，人们克服了巨大的技术难题。

 

To tackle the crisis of food shortage, Yuan Longping devoted his life to developing self-pollinating hybrid rice, which can attain a higher yield than conventional crops. Envisioning broom-sized rice ears and salty soil rice, he turned his visions into reality through intense effort, enabling farmers to expand their output greatly and alleviating hunger and poverty. Today, it’s estimated that 60 percent of domestic rice consumption in China is comprised of crops generated from Yuan’s hybrid strains. Despite his advanced years, he didn’t retire for leisure because deep down he cares not celebrity or money.

为解决食品短缺危机，袁隆平一生致力于研发可自我授粉的杂交水稻，它们能获得比传统作物更高的产量。展望着扫帚大小的稻穗和盐碱土壤稻，他以热切的努力把想象变为现实，使农民能够极大地扩大产量并减轻了饥饿和贫穷。如今，据估计中国国内稻米消费量中有大约60%来自他的杂交品种形成的作物。尽管年事已高，他也不为了休闲而退休，因为在内心深处他不在意名望和金钱。

 

In conventional farming, widespread use of pesticides and artificial fertilisers kills helpful bacteria in soil and leaves harmful chemicals, which affects crops’ nutritional value and flavour and, in turn, the humans who digest them. Hence, to make the crops rich in nutrition and essential minerals, people have employed organic farming as an alternative to chemical farming. For instance, in an extension of urban farm, a wartime tunnel against bombs, people stop using man-made chemicals entirely and plant crops with diverse roots to use different depths of soil, such as wheat and beans.     

在传统种植业中，杀虫剂和人造肥料的广泛使用杀死土壤中的有益细菌并留下有害化学物质，这会影响作物的营养价值和口味，进而影响消化作物的人类。因此，为了让庄稼富含营养和必要矿物质，人们采用了有机种植作为化学种植的替代品。例如，在一处由战时防轰炸隧道扩建成的城市农场，人们完全停止使用化学物质，为使用土壤的不同深度种植有着不同根系的作物，例如小麦和豆类。

 

选背：It’s a pity that organic and sustainable farming is nowhere near able to meet the increasing consumption demands of food. Therefore, scientists have been conducting agricultural research to make innovations. For instance, drip irrigation which can deny moisture to weeds and hydroponics using nutrient-rich water instead of soil have been widely used in commercial vertical farms. Besides, self-driving agricultural machinery  can carry out a diversity of tasks such as ploughing and planting, fertilising and irrigating, managing pest and harvesting.

  Whether astronomers using telescopes to find solid proof of the steady state theory, or epidemiologists observing proteins, cells and virus with microscopes to develop vaccines, outstanding scientists conduct research into frontier science out of pure scientific spirit rather than achieving fame. Nevertheless, it’s not unusual for them to be household names.

In the early 19^th century, many households came down with a severe disease called Cholera. Frustrated by multiple deaths, John Snow desired to destroy Cholera once and for all. Facing two contradictory theories, he subscribed to the latter and suspected that the pump water carrying germs was to blame for infection. Furthermore, he used statistics to link water pump polluted by raw waste to outbreak of Cholera. Thanks to his finding and intervention, the threat saw a substantial decrease and people’s thinking of epidemiology was transformed.

Another vivid example is Qian Xuesen. Besides being brilliant and gifted, he was patriotic. When the breaking out of Songhu Battle cast shadow on peace, he shifted his major from Mechanical Engineering to aviation, learning abstract concept and theoretical framework on making jet to defend homeland. After pursuing further study as a graduate assistant in America, he was put in charge of China’s aerospace and missile programme and got down to doing some concrete work. Under his leadership, China developed the initial Dongfeng missiles, to which the Shenzhou rockets can be traced back.

另外一个生动的例子是钱学森。除了聪明和有天赋，他还爱国。当淞沪会战的爆发为和平蒙上阴影，他把专业从机械工程转为航空，学习关于制造喷气式飞机的抽象概念和理论框架以保卫祖国。在美国以助教的身份深造后，他被安排掌管中国的航空和导弹项目，开始着手做一些具体的工作。在他的领导下，中国开发出了最早的东风导弹，（如今的）神州火箭可以追溯到这种导弹。

 

Rainbow usually appears after it pours. Their experiences proved that new findings were usually made in handling threat, faults and frustrations, and above all, we must have scientific spirit.

I’m Xie Lei. Last year, to obtain a business qualification and qualify myself to enter a firm, I participated in a year-long exchange programme. Recalling my experience, I’d like to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad.

我是谢蕾。去年为获得一张商务证书以有资格进入一家公司，我参加了为期一年的交换生项目。回想我的经历，我想谈谈出国留学的优缺点。

 

For one thing, as far as I know, we can strengthen personal competence with the guidance of advisors and tutors. Throughout adaptation to new surroundings, I learnt to acknowledge when citing, speak up when giving presentations, becoming more motivated, optimistic, and ambitious. Furthermore, exposure to another culture and cooperation with people from diverse cultural backgrounds give us insights to view the world from different angles. We become cultural envoys or messengers with global perspectives and outlook, promoting the Belt and Road Initiative.  

一方面，在我看来，我们可以在顾问和导师的指导下增强个人竞争力。在适应新环境的过程中，我学会了在引用时鸣谢，在做陈述时大声发言，变得更加有动力，更乐观，更有理想。此外，接触另一种文化以及与不同文化背景的人们合作赋予了我们从不同角度观察世界的洞察力。我们成为了拥有全球视野和眼界的文化使者或信使，推动了“一带一路”的倡议。

 

For another, generally speaking, international students will face tremendous pressure. To begin with, tuition fees and living expenses will end up costing most families an arm and a leg. Besides, for those not mature enough, stepping out of comfort zone to suffer from overwhelming homesickness, tight budget, culture shock and complex academic requirements is so depressing that they can’t adapt to new setting or engage in grasping knowledge. Not feeling at home, they can’t behave confidently when getting involved in/with social activities. I suppose their final outcome is departure.

另一方面，通常来说，国际生将面临巨大的压力。首先，学费和生活开支最终花大多数家庭一大笔钱。此外，对于那些不够成熟的学生来说，走出舒适区去经受难以克服的想家，紧张的预算，文化冲击，以及复杂的学术要求是如此的令人沮丧，以至于他们不能适应新环境，不能专注于掌握知识。他们在参加社交活动时举止不自信。我认为他们最终的结果是离开。

 

To sum up, as far as I am concerned, one cannot deny the fact that studying abroad makes us more competent to achieve ambition and contributes to the dramatic boom of Chinese economy. Nevertheless, you should maintain reasonable expectations and make logical judgements before being applicant. Do you side with my views? People say that you are what you eat. Put more simply, this means “cuisine go hand in hand with our temper, character and culture.” I used to be a bold person who slice off some bacon, ham, or sausage for every dinner, but now I prefer vegetarian food and become somewhat different in personality.    

人们常说，人如其食。简单来说，这句话的意思是，菜肴与我们的脾气，性格和文化密切相关。我曾是一个敢于冒险的人，每顿饭都切下一些培根，火腿和香肠吃，但现在我更喜欢素食，并且在性格上变得有些不同了。

 

Prior to starting my own business, I was the chief chef of a cafeteria that offered conventional Western dinner consisting of appetizers, main courses, soup, and dessert. I also learnt exceptional Chinese recipes in Zibo, including red braised pork, pearl meatballs, hand-torn cabbage, steamed fish head covered with chillies, and dry pot duck with golden buns. I also tasted elegant dim sum, lamb kebab peppered with peppercorns, boiled dumplings served with vinegar and garlic, and pancake rolls stuffed with Chinese green onions.

Currently, I’m running a vegetarian canteen called Madams’ Association, which offers different categories of ideal diets and quantities of tricks to healthy eating. We use olives, figs, bean curd, dairy products and other ingredients full of vitamins and fibre. Beyond/Besides this, we don’t suggest consumers to consume junk food regardless of their overall consumption of calory. Finally, keeping consistent eating habits is a fundamental key. For instance, chewing at a moderate speed helps consume a modest amount of food.     

目前，我经营着一家名为“女士联盟”的素食餐厅，提供不同种类的理想饮食和大量健康饮食的技巧。我们使用橄榄、无花果、豆腐、乳制品等富含维生素和纤维的食材。除此之外，我们建议顾客吃垃圾食品时不要不顾整体热量的摄入。最后，保持一贯的饮食习惯是首要的关键。 例如，以适度的速度咀嚼有助于消耗适量的食物。

Though public concern for healthy eating has mushroomed, running a new brand isn’t a piece of cake and I’m not rolling in dough. But at a minimum, I have shifted to a brand new diet.    

尽管公众对健康饮食的关注越来越多，运营一个新品牌并不是件轻而易举的事情，我也没有发大财。但至少，我已经转向了全新的饮食方式。

 

  As a travel photographer enrolled in Photography Association, I prefer traveling by rail rather than commercial airline. My recent trip crossing Canada took a duration of four days and it was the most awesome journey I had ever taken.

作为一名在摄影协会注册的旅行摄影师，我更喜欢乘火车旅行而不是坐商业航空公司的飞机。我最近穿越加拿大的旅行历时四天，是我迄今为止经历过的最棒的旅程。

 

On a freezing cold morning, I arose early to take a frosted train bound east. Contrary to what I anticipated, the train is as hot as an oven. Pulling back the curtain, I appreciated the beautiful scenery as the train thundered across the great Canadian Prairie, which is home to a bunch of quarries, oil drilling facilities, and wheat-growing farms. In addition to seeing spectacular mountain peaks and massive forests, one highlight of my trip was spotting various creatures, including deer, goats, and even a grizzly bear.

On a pleasant dusk, the train stopped in Toronto before proceeding to the next leg. In the harbour area, I saw skyscrapers of steel, old-fashioned cobblestone streets, and many shopping malls selling crafts and antiques. Looking across the shores of Lake Ontario on border, I was astonished to see misty clouds over the bay, which literally took my breath away. In Montreal, in contrast to Toronto, all the signs and advertisements were in French and many people spoke English with an accent.       

在一个宜人的黄昏，火车在前往下一站之前停在多伦多。在港口区，我看到钢铁摩天大楼，老式的鹅卵石街道以及许多卖手工艺品和古董的购物中心。望着位于边境的安大略湖的对岸，我惊讶的看到了海湾上方的薄雾，这场景简直令我震撼。与多伦多截然不同，在蒙特利尔，所有的标识和广告都是用法语的，还有许多人用带着口音的英语交谈。

 

However coherent my narrative is, you owe it to yourself to try in person anyhow. When the train is speeding alongside the river, you’ll toast to your decision.

On a foggy day, a scream interrupted my sleeping in. My elderly grandfather, who lived with me in the suburbs, slipped and fell over onto the carpet by the bathtub when catching mosquitoes, causing a minor heart attack. Not knowing any first-aid techniques, I called an emergency number in panic and the operator sent an ambulance without delay. On arrival, the paramedic checked his vital signs and gave him an IV needle.

 

在一个大雾天，一声尖叫打断了我的懒觉。和我一起住在郊区的年老的爷爷在抓蚊子时滑了一下，摔倒在了浴缸旁的地毯上，导致了轻微的心脏病发作。不懂任何急救技巧，我惊慌地拨打了紧急电话，接线员立即派出了救护车。到达后，医护人员检查了他的生命体征并进行了静脉注射。

In the hospital ward, seeing my grandfather out of shape, I couldn’t justify my ignorance. Having got a membership on a welfare website, I received a leaflet and a first-aid manual, which taught me practical first-aid techniques for medical emergencies, such as drowning, sprained ankle, poisoning and bad cut/bleeding.  

在医院病房里，看着憔悴的爷爷，我无法为自己的无知辩护。在一个福利网站注册了会员后，我收到了一张宣传单和一份急救手册，手册教给我应对各种医疗紧急情况的实用急救技巧。例如溺水、扭伤脚踝、中毒和剧烈出血。

 

Taking burning for example, our skin, the largest organ, can get burnt by a variety of things: radiation, the sun’s rays, electric shock, toxins, or acids. First-degree burns affect only the top few millimetres of the skin, causing swollen blisters, while severe burns affect every layer of the skin, damaging nerves and tissue underneath. Victims even lose the sense of touch. You should remove fabric sticking to the burnt skin, apply some medicine easing discomfort, and wrap the burnt area loosely with a clean cloth.

以烧伤为例，我们的皮肤，身体最大的器官，可能会被各种东西烧伤：辐射、太阳的光线、电击、毒素或酸。一级烧伤只会影响皮肤表层几毫米，造成肿胀的水疱，而严重的烧伤会影响皮肤的每一层，破坏下面的神经和组织。受伤者甚至会失去触觉。你应该去掉黏在烧伤皮肤上的织物，涂上一些缓解不适的药物，然后用干净的布宽松地包裹烧伤区域。

 

Compared with burning, choking require more urgent attention because the victims usually has only minutes before collapsing. If your fellow diner hold his throat desperately when swallowing steak, slapping after laying him face down on your lap may force out the obstructions. If this doesn’t work, you must help him to his feet and perform the Heimlich manoeuvre: grab your fist with your other hand tightly and push into his upper stomach in quick motion.

During the Middle Ages, painters use primitive and two-dimensional works to show characters from religious mythology. As Christianity declined in the Renaissance, subsequent painters adopt a more humanistic attitude to life, setting their works apart from the former ones. With breakthrough in perspective and oil paints in particular, influential realists precisely preserve realistic scenes and people’s appearance. Before contemporary photography emerged, brides, nobles, and other clients of high rank wanted to purchase accurate portraits of themselves from masters of realism.

The highlight of ancient Chinese art emerged in the Tang Dynasty, when trade boomed and Buddhism showed expansion. We have bronze bowls, ceramic vases and jade sculptures, most of which are of Buddhist origin. Also of primary note is ink wash paintings. When humble bookmen  failed to gain entry into the civil service, they tried to gain recognition and reputation as painters. Fond of painting pond with water lilies or sunrise over a arched bridge, they sought to convey not just the outer image of these subjects, but their inner humanity and subjective criticism as well.    

中国古代艺术的亮点出现在唐朝，当时贸易蓬勃发展，佛教也展现出了扩张的势头。我们有青铜碗、陶瓷花瓶和玉雕塑，其中大部分是源自佛教。同样重要的是水墨画。当卑微的文人入仕（进入政府部门）失败，他们努力通过当画家获得认可和声誉。他们喜欢画长满睡莲的水塘或或者拱桥上的日出，试图传达的不仅是这些主题的外在形象，还有他们内在的人性和主观的批判。

Then comes an exhibition displaying Cubism sculptures sculpted by contemporary, modern and emerging sculptors. What is worthy of your attention is that they don’t emphasize the precise frame of objects, creating abstract and dream-like visual effects.

To absorb stress, I used to be absorbed in watching comedies while eating sugary nuts, ignoring my dentist and fitness consultant. Feeling worn out, I would rely on cigarette to get refreshed. These bad habits disturbed my physical health, making me feel dizzy and get the flu easily. Having been examined by a surgeon and warned the risk of lung surgery for tobacco abuse, I felt stressed out and turned to a psychology specialist for suggestions.

为了减压，我过去常常沉迷于边看喜剧边吃甜的坚果，不理会我的牙医和健身顾问。感到疲惫时，我会依赖香烟来振作精神。这些坏习惯影响了我的身体健康，让我感到头晕并且容易感冒。经过外科医生的检查，被警告烟草滥用可能导致肺部手术的风险后，我感到很有压力，于是向心理专家寻求建议。

 

 

In response to my consultation, he explained to me “habit cycle”, which is composed of three elements: cue, routine, and reward. To faciliate enhancing the quality of my life, I must replace a negative routine with something positive. For instance, don’t ride escalator and take the stairs instead. Stimulated by his sound advice, I skipped and rode a skateboard every day. Aside from this, I went bowling monthly. Eventually, I became a dynamic soldier of the People’s Liberation Army after shaving off my beard.

Harmful habits, such as skipping breakfast, abuse of alcohol and even illegal drugs, will dominate a teenager’s life, so we have to make up our minds and decide on appropriate changes. However, there’s no magic pill or delete button that will help us, so don’t become pessimistic if you are not successful straight away. Show some discipline and repeatedly take many small steps

有害习惯，如不吃早餐，滥用酒精甚至违禁药物，会主宰青少年的生活，因此我们必须下定决心去选定适当的改变。然而，没有神奇药片或删除按钮可以帮我们，所以如果你不能立刻取得成功，不要变得悲观。要有自制力，并且不断小步前进。

 

As the graph shows, there’s no doubt that Earth is suffering greatly from greenhouse effect. According to comprehensive evidence submitted by researchers, global warming is mainly caused by the destruction of tropical jungle in the Amazon basin and high emissions of greenhouse gas, such as methane and carbon dioxide. This worldwide warming trend is responsible for the chaos of Earth’s sensitive ecology. It’s frequently broadcast that seals, penguins and polar bears starved to death for melting ice.

An increasing volume of enterprises releasing smog are being closed. The government also advocates that individuals should live a moderate and low-carbon life, reducing carbon footprint.

为了减少每年的碳排放量并保持地球宜居，中国正在实施重要政策并进行全面改革。限制化石燃料（的使用），同时建设了包括数十座核电站在内的可持续能源系统。（数量）越来越多的排放烟雾的企业被关闭。政府还倡导个人过适度的低碳的生活，减少碳足迹。

 

Furthermore, in waterway conservation, a comprehensive initiative was added to the government agenda, aiming to restore the river’s original beauty. With strict regulations that garbage should be disposed of in disposal facilities set up, the local authorities carry out inspections regularly and fine commercial and industrial enterprises for throwing garbage into the river. With such campaigns in effect, China’s waterways are heading towards a sustainable future.

Learning my resolution to organize an voyage to Antarctica, he resolved to join in the Antarctic expedition. I turned him down since his motive was to be envied by others. Unfortunately, this unqualified candidate went aboard my ship hiding in a cupboard. I had to assigned him to be a steward serving the crew. Approaching the South Pole, our ship got crushed by the ice and sank with our personal belongings: decent food, warm blankets, and cosy furniture. Fortunately, despite rough seas, bitter colds and cruel weather, my loyal navigator and motor expert persevered in saving us from this miserable place.

In Shakespeare’s dramas during the Victorian era, characters from civilians to kings all speak in blank verse.

Reading poetry books awaiting us on shelves is like entering into correspondence with celebrated poets. Compared with prose, poetry like sonnets can easily convey certain moods, such as joy, sorrow, grief, and sympathy. To promote comprehension and get to the core, we must comprehend from the poet’s perspective and have a sympathetic understanding of the poets’ moods. Besides, each poem has its own respective theme. Dream Variation, for example, is about a world free of inequality and racial prejudice, a dream that corresponds with the poet’s innocence.

In 2050, with the division between humans and robots becoming more blurred, advanced robots seem more like humans than machines. Some science fiction writers even declare that robots will be superior to us and take over. Typically, whoever is charged with a crime should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise, so I have a strong urge to know what will happen in the future.

It happened that my niece was elected chairwoman of a company  testing out time machine. During an appointment with her, I sat myself in the leather seat of the Time Machine. Gripping the starting lever on the main panel, I pushed it forwards an inch then immediately backwards again.The laboratory went hazy around me. As I travelled at maximum pace, the walls fell away like puffs of smoke and night came as if the lamp suspended from the ceiling were being turned out. With a sudden jolt, the machine was flipped on its side. I was stunned to find myself in the year of 2100.

In a venue where saleswomen and salesmen were introducing the the pros and cons of various robots, I learned at random several robots alien to me. Driving robots with calculating ability have exploded. They don’t need salary and bonus, so taxi fare went down sharply. Robot-cops with integrity are treated with dignity, whereas many policemen were dismissed for inaction. Domestic robots can do most labour, like removing mud from a handkerchief, climbing up ladder to fetch 50 grams of flour or cut your nails on a weekly basis.

After this time travel, I currently regard the statements of sci-fi authors as absurd overstatements. These ridiculous rumors conflict with evolution theory, for which they should feel guilty.

Located to the south of the equator and Torres Strait, Australia is a great getaway with many iconic attractions, including grand monuments, yummy meals and animals with unique biology. In a peak season, I came to this country with a special political system.

Unlike a horn, I had to vibrate my lips with certain frequency to change pitch, which was so tiring that I had a frog in my throat and bought a handful of herbs from a licensed clinic.

In a geothermal park, I saw a flock of kangaroos jumping with freedom in their natural domain. During an early phase, this creature featuring a pouch was threatened by arrows from violent hunters. Then the Prime Minister, premier of Australian government, proposed the foundation of reserves with fences, entitled local police to give longer prison sentences to hunters without hunting license and encouraged individuals to sponsor a kangaroo to preserve its health and liberty. Joint efforts against violence have improved its distribution.

In the last shopping session, I bought a sample of duck-billed platypus, a primitive mammal with capacity to hatch eggs in nests. Personally speaking, I agree with the straightforward tourism slogan: “There’s nothing like Australia.”
