Whether astronomers using telescopes to find solid proof of the steady state theory, or epidemiologists observing proteins, cells and virus with microscopes to develop vaccines, outstanding scientists conduct research into frontier science out of pure scientific spirit rather than achieving fame. In the early 19th century, many households came down with a severe disease called Cholera. Frustrated by multiple deaths, John Snow desired to destroy Cholera once and for all. Facing two contradictory theories, he subscribed to the latter and suspected that the pump water carrying germs was to blame for infection. Furthermore, he used statistics to link water pump polluted by raw waste to outbreak of Cholera. Thanks to his finding and intervention, the threat saw a substantial decrease and people’s thinking of epidemiology was transformed.

Another vivid example is Qian Xuesen. Besides being brilliant and gifted, he was patriotic. When the breaking out of Songhu Battle cast shadow on peace, he shifted his major from Mechanical Engineering to aviation, learning abstract concept and theoretical framework on making jet to defend homeland. After pursuing further study as a graduate assistant in America, he was put in charge of China’s aerospace and missile programme and got down to doing some concrete work. Under his leadership, China developed the initial Dongfeng missiles, to which the Shenzhou rockets can be traced back.
另外一个生动的例子是钱学森。除了聪明和有天赋,他还爱国。当淞沪会战的爆发为和平蒙上阴影,他把专业从机械工程转为航空,学习关于制造喷气式飞机的抽象概念和理论框架以保卫祖国。在美国以助教的身份深造后,他被安排掌管中国的航空和导弹项目,开始着手做一些具体的工作。在他的领导下,中国开发出了最早的东风导弹,(如今的)神州火箭可以追溯到这种导弹。
Rainbow usually appears after it pours. Their experiences proved that new findings were usually made in handling threat, faults and frustrations, and above all, we must have scientific spirit.
